Course Summary

The module has been developed to improve the care provided to patients with Asthma & COPD as both are major causes of morbidity and mortality in the UK. The module aims to improve the knowledge base of health professionals working with Asthma & COPD patients in hospital or community settings to enhance the level of patient care, and will empower the health professional to make an early intervention and ensure treatment is of the highest standard. Key elements of the course includes; pharmacology, acute exacerbations, oxygen therapy, physiotherapy, rehabilitation, psychological care, palliative care and explores the differences between Asthma and C.O.P.D.
The module encompasses the following assessments:

Formative assessment

As a formative assessment process, within a specific scenario, you will be expected to:

demonstrate a respiratory inhaler device

demonstrate use of a PEF

Explain a procedure and/or results relating to spirometry.

Summative assessment: (Level 7)

A 3500 word reflective case study (100%) (Learning outcomes 1.2.3.4)

This module is designed for practitioners who work in either acute or community care setting and will enable students to gain the knowledge and skills to manage patients with COPD, and Asthma and differentiate between asthma.

The module endeavours to develop knowledge, understanding and management of COPD and Asthma and is delivered by a wide multi-disciplinary team to give a holistic approach to care.
