Staffordshire University is a prominent higher education institution with a heritage going back more than 100 years. Based in the West Midlands, it offers postgraduate students a comprehensive range of quality, career-focused postgraduate courses – with a particular excellence in engineering and science disciplines. The university was recently rated 108th in the UK in the Complete University Guide 2024 league table.
Staffordshire University’s story begins in 1906, with mining classes being offered from a two-acre site. It grew in scope and depth, going through various forms before becoming the North Staffordshire Polytechnic in 1970, Staffordshire Polytechnic in 1980, and finally one of the ‘new universities’ in 1992. Today it provides postgraduate students with dozens of programmes, robust student support and great access to professional opportunities.
With a campus located just 15 minutes from the centre of Stoke-on-Trent, giving students easy access to a range of specialist and digital facilities on campus along with entertainment, shopping and leisure in the city. A brand-new eSports hub, digital forensics labs, modern libraries and a range of bars, cafes and eateries are just some of what the Stoke-on-Trent has to offer. There’s also the Centre for Health Innovation in Stafford, focusing cutting-edge facilities and expertise in one specialist location.
Stoke-on-Trent and Stafford are accessible, affordable and welcoming communities that are just over 15 minutes away from each other by train. From cities with rich manufacturing histories to bustling market towns, it’s a great location for student life with plenty of nightlife, countryside and student social life.
Staffordshire University offers a number of postgraduate courses that are great step for a wide range of students, whatever their background or goals. The university offers challenging, contemporary programmes across dozens of subject areas, delivered through its four schools:

The university is particularly noted for its engineering programmes, which are globally rated, as well as strong courses across other STEM subjects.
Postgraduate students can complete a qualification at Staffordshire in under a year, perfect for professional training or a change in academic direction – a PGCert or PGDip is possible, along with various professional training courses.
Full master’s courses range across LLM, MA, MBA, MSc and more, depending on the disciplinary focus. Research students can explore an MRes at master’s level or explore doctoral qualifications, such as the MPhil or PhD.
Many of the postgraduate courses are available on a part-time study pattern, and there are various taught master’s degrees that are available totally online.
The University of Staffordshire offers places on its postgraduate courses to students that meet the stated entry requirements, to ensure that each student is well-suited to their study and able to achieve their academic potential.
For example, students applying to the MSc in Mechanical Engineering and Sustainable Energy Technologies will need to have an undergraduate honours degree in a relevant engineering or technology subject, with a 2:2 grade or higher. Students without this qualification but significant relevant experience will also be considered.
Applicants for the MA in Ceramics will typically have an undergraduate honours degree at a 2:1 or higher level. Students with significant experience and an interest in the subject will also be considered for entry.
Students applying for the MBA in Business Administration can be considered for entry with an undergraduate honours degree in any subject background, with a 2:2 grade or higher. Applicants will also need a minimum of one years’ work experience in a managerial or leadership position.
Entry requirements for postgraduate programmes at Staffordshire may be liable to change over time.
The University of Staffordshire achieves strong graduate employment or further study rates for its students, with the vast majority of them finding new opportunities within six months of graduating.
The university delivers these results through an educational approach that places employability at its core. Students are able to learn from renowned academics and industry professionals, who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the course curriculum. Contemporary research and connections to relevant sectors allow course content to be continually updated, giving students a cutting-edge in competitive graduate job markets.
Students are also supported in obtaining experience through volunteer work, internships or placements during their studies, with departmental connections providing invaluable links to relevant employers.
There are various university-wide initiatives designed to further enhance student job prospects outside the classroom. The university has a dedicated Careers Studio that provides personalised advice and guidance sessions with experienced employability coaches, as well as employability masterclasses in areas like interview techniques, CV writing and networking.
An annual employability and enterprise festival, as well as a university-run employment agency, Unitemps, are further bonuses for careers-minded students.
Postgraduate students at Staffordshire University will be able to choose from a wide range of modern, well-priced and conveniently located accommodation. There are two postgraduate-only facilities, Leek Road Houses and Clarice Cliff Court, with a good portion of it benefiting from recent renovation.
The university offers postgraduate students longer leases than other students, allowing extra time for students to settle into their surroundings and meet the requirements of their course. Students can choose from shared bathroom or en-suite accommodation, but all options have contents insurance and good Wi-Fi as standard. Bills are included in the accommodation price, which can range from £95 to £130 a week depending on the location and room type selected.
Private accommodation is also available in Stoke-on-Trent or Stafford, ranging from private halls to a range of student lettings including townhouses and apartments. Renting is quite affordable in this region compared to other parts of the country, and students can access additional advice and support from university teams around identifying and securing appropriate private accommodation. Stoke-on-Trent is a city known for its creativity, with a history of pottery and crafts, and is located near the famous Peak District National Park.
Staffordshire University supports a variety of scholarships and bursaries open to postgraduate students. Some of the available funding options can be found below, while students can explore the full range of opportunities on the university’s website.
Students who have already graduated from a degree programme at the university and are pursuing a postgraduate qualification will be eligible for an alumni discount. This provides a 25% reduction to tuition fees for students who have graduated from Staffordshire in the last two years – all others will receive a 10% reduction.
There is a range of teaching scholarships, including the PGCE Bursary and Dr. Ruth Thompson range of scholarships. These awards range in value, from £375 to £1,000.
Students can also access funding from various external organisations, ranging from doctoral funding from research councils and training partnerships, to companies, charities and government bodies. Eligibility criteria and application deadlines vary for these funding pathways, so students should consult the specific funding body pages for information before applying.
