Course Summary

The module will guide and analyse the application of teaching practice within the workplace from planning a teaching session through to its delivery and to its final evaluation, thus ensuring that the method of teaching is matched with the desired intent. However, whilst we strive for the ideal, teaching within the workplace is not always easy; therefore this module also considers the challenges to teaching in the workplace where the environment cannot always be predicted and teaching sometimes has to be amended. This module is one of 4 modules you can study to obtain the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education which, upon completion, would enable you to apply for accreditation with the Higher Education Academy as Associate Fellow. Students undertaking this module would normally be employed within the health or social care sector and successful completion of this module / award would be for personal and professional Continuing Professional Development.

The module examines the underpinning theory associated with teaching practice including setting learning outcomes and constructive alignment. There will be opportunity for you to critically reflect upon and evaluate various approaches commonly used within teaching practise such as lecture, problem based learning, group work, tutorial, and simulation, as well as the use of humanities, metaphor and humour within teaching. Models relating to the evaluation of teaching will also be considered.
