SWANSEA UNIVERSITY
Overall Rating

I had the most positive experience at Swansea I think I could have asked for. I had some brilliant lecturers, I absolutely loved my Undergraduate degree (American Studies) which I achieved a First Class in which then earned me a fully paid scholarship for my Masters, I got 2 excellent jobs in the University as well as 2 separate work experience placements, and when I needed the emotional and academic support it was there, when I struggled with the transition in my first year I spoke to the Wellbeing centre and they were so helpful and supportive

Student Union

Recently there has been some improvements in the Union, the current elected officers have made some positive changes but by and large the Union doesn't bring a lot to the University in my opinion. There isn't a lot of unity between the two and it's largely hard to see what the Union do. I haven't been particularly involved with the union, I joined a few societies over the years but nothing seriously as I didn't find it that valuable for my time, I instead become more involved in the what the University had to offer through work experience

Clubs and Societies

There is a vast range of sports clubs and societies, from Chess to Cricket, charitable societies, academic societies, religious societies, political party societies and almost every sport you can think of. There's something for everyone

Uni Facilities

As a campus university, we have a lot of excellent facilities. Having a GP surgery, dentist, shop, bank, post office and plenty of food outlets is really useful. Our academic facilities are also excellent, we have a vast library and a fair amount of study space, and the university pays a lot for online journal/text book access. For students of all disciples of science we have excellent, brand-new, state of the art facilities. Overall the facilities on campus are excellent.

Course and Lecturers

As an MA student on a Taught Masters, what I like the most is the interactive element of seminars where the students will debate and discuss the topic at hand
However, this is in some ways what I like least as I enrolled on a Taught Masters but I have very few lectures, they are predominantly student-led seminars which in some instances can be extremely enlightening and helpful, but on the flip side of that is the case where there is limited participation and not a lot is learnt

City Life

Swansea is great for city life, there's everything you need in the city centre from shops, to cinemas, restaurants, activities like bowling and laser tag, and Swansea Market where you can buy good quality fresh produce for an excellent price. Then you have the benefit of walking 15 minutes away from the city centre and you're on the beach

Job Prospects

Swansea University has several excellent departments that aid in part-time work and finding work experience placements. We firstly have the Swansea Employment Academy (SEA) who hold workshops in skills such as CV writing and interview skills. We also have a GoWales office who can help students find work experience in the University or Swansea area, for example in the Family Housing Association or departments such as the International Development Office (these are two placements that I have undertaken). We also have a Reaching Wider department who work with the Welsh Government to encourage further or higher education amongst school age children between the school years 6 to year 13, Reaching Wider host different work shops and events for these children to visit the Univserstiy, and students have the option to become Student Leaders and work these events. Not only are these paid positions but they provide valuable work experience in working with young children and teenagers, some of which have learning difficulties. Lastly, there is the Student Ambassador Scheme where students apply for a paid position to become an Ambassador and represent the University on Open Days, Visit Days and work throughout the year on different events within the colleges or under the Student Recruitment Office

Student Support

The academic support is really good, I've had some excellent academic and emotional support from my lecturers. The University does have a Well-being centre who can offer you emotional support, counselling sessions and help you liaise with your lecturers if you're struggling and there is an Academic and Learning Support department
