Course Summary

The Education for the Health Professions course has been designed specifically to equip you with an in-depth understanding of educational principles and values and to develop your expertise in teaching, assessing and supervision. Throughout your studies, you will refine your critical research and analytical skills and develop professional reflective practice techniques.

You’re learning will be assessed through coursework including written assignments, research projects, essays and seminar presentations plus a dissertation of 20,000 words. On successful completion of this course you will be eligible for Membership of the Academy of Medical Educators (AoME), and Fellowship or Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). This Master’s qualification opens the door to careers in healthcare education across a number of sectors including further and higher education, the NHS, adult and community education, and private training providers. This course is accredited by The Academy of Medical Educators.

Modules

This module aims to develop the student?s awareness of the key issues, principles and values of quality teaching in the workplace setting, and their ability to reflect upon, analyse and interpret their own professional practice in healthcare and education using a range of theoretical frameworks. By the end of this module the student should be able to: design and critically evaluate an appropriate teaching session in their workplace; critically evaluate and apply appropriately a wide range of learning and teaching strategies; demonstrate a critical awareness of the learning environment; critically evaluate their own teaching and learning practices; demonstrate engagement with and reflection on their own professional development.

Entry requirements

Students need an appropriate degree or its equivalent from an approved institution (preferably 2:2 or above) and evidence of recent academic study of a professional qualification and a minimum of two year’s relevant work experience and responsibilities. If they are a registered nurse or a midwife seeking to achieve either: Practice Teacher (Stage 3 of the NMC (2008) Standards for Supporting Learning and Assessment in Practice (SLAiP)) or Teacher status (Stage 4 of the NMC (2008) SLAiP) they need to demonstrate that they have developed their knowledge, skills and competence beyond registration i.e. registered and worked for at least two years, and gained additional qualifications that will support students (NMC 2008).
