Course Summary

The project will be shaped by your participation in research activities such as seminars, workshops, laboratory activity and field work, as well as your involvement in one of our established research groups. Swansea is a research-led University and our department makes a significant contribution. We have staff working on post-disaster landscapes (Professor Marcus Doel), new understandings of nationalism (Dr Angharad Closs Stephens), and post-conflict cultural revival (Dr Amanda Rogers). Their expertise will support your work. The diverse work of our current research projects includes:

  • Advancing the application of stable isotopes in tree rings as indicators of climate/environmental change
  • Quantification of the past and future contribution of glaciers and ice sheets to sea level rise
  • Understanding the response of the biosphere to variations in climate
  • Understanding international migration patterns and processes associated with forced migration, labour migration and mixed flows
  • Cities and urban theory, focusing on the interface between human geography and continental philosophy

In the latest Research Assessment Exercise, 95% of Geography research at Swansea was judged to be of international quality, and 60% was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
