This programme develops your knowledge and skills to consult in energy and environmental legal areas. The programme develops our understanding about how environmental law affects the energy industry in a technical, economic and political context. You learn about fossil fuel dependency, low carbon energy, energy security and transition to sustainable economic development.
Courses include: International Energy and Environmental Law, Low Carbon Energy Transition, Renewable Energy Law, Oil and Mining Resources for Good, Principles of Environmental Regulation, Low Carbon Energy Transition to Nuclear Energy and Carbon Capture and Storage, Corporate Environmental Liability, Downstream Energy Law, Critical Legal Thinking and Energy and Environmental Law Professional Skills
Your courses widen your knowledge and understanding of two areas of law and their interdependencies. You benefit from advanced understanding of matters which are of core interest to policy makers and in turn affect socio-economic functionality and communities. You learn the balance between energy supply and regulation and alternative energies to improve environment. Whilst you study you are welcome to attend events, seminars and conferences across the university and city and you can get involved in the various student law projects whilst you study.
The School of Law offers a strong range of environmental LLMs which include: Energy Law with Dissertation or Professional Skills, General Law (environmental courses included), and Oil and Gas Law with Dissertation or Professional Skills LLM. The programme is relevant globally along with many other oil and gas related professional qualifications at master’s level. The School is augmented by the Centre for Energy Law and research groups in Energy and Environmental Law. Upon graduation you can go into the legal profession and careers or you can apply your knowledge to regulation, directly to businesses and organisations or teaching.

Students need to have a 2(1) honours degree in Law (or another related discipline) or equivalent. Relevant practical experience will also be beneficial.
