Course Summary

This programme develops the knowledge you need, to evaluate, prospect and lead viable oil and gas field development planning. You learn modules from the School of Engineering and The School of Geology, and you are in a major world oil and gas hub. Additionally, the programme is accredited by the Energy Institute and Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

  • Engineering is ranked 7th in the UK and 1st in Scotland.
  • Geology is ranked 3rd in Scotland. (CUG 2020)
  • General Engineering is ranked 3rd in the UK (Guardian University Guide 2020)
  • You study in a leading ‘World Energy City’ where you are surrounded with the oil and gas industry, air and sea logistical operations, suppliers, conferences, and specialist organisations and associations
  • You are taught by a multicultural and internationally experienced team of professionals and researchers with direct advisory input from the industry. Studying online allows you to benefit from all these networks at a known higher education provider to the industry

You develop analytical capability, academic rigour, latest thinking and experience of new technology and you gain the confidence to hit the ground running in industry. There are over 900 energy related companies, of which 20 are FTSE 100 companies in the city itself. Multinational companies such as Chevron, Petrofac, BP, Maersk, Total, Royal Dutch Shell, Wood Group and many others employ people globally. You benefit from Industry connections, and engagement enables direct industry involvement in Programme/ Industry advisory panels, guest lectures, field trips, site visits, networking and careers events plus industry supported student projects.

You study in two main Schools:

The School of Engineering offer a range of postgraduate degrees in oil and gas engineering, petroleum engineering, process safety, project management, renewable energy engineering, reservoir engineering, safety and reliability engineering and subsea engineering. Research cuts across petroleum and natural gas engineering; mechanics of fluids, soil and structures; electrical and electronic engineering and theoretical and applied mechanics.

The School of Geosciences dates to 1892 and offers dynamic programmes associated with the oil and gas industry but also focusing on sedimentary basins, Basin Fill, Earth Sciences, Earth Surface Processes, Tectonics and Geophysics. The School has three departments which are: Archaeology, Geography and Environment and Geology and Petroleum Geology.

The University of Aberdeen has an excellent track record of programmes across disciplines covering the entire oil and gas supply chain. You learn from internationally experienced academics and researchers with direct experience of the industry. The programme is also available online.

The University of Aberdeen and Kings College is the 5th oldest university in the UK. It was founded by Bishop William Elphinstone in 1495. It is “Open to all and dedicated to the pursuit of truth in the service of others.” It provides progressive, innovative research. Initially aligned to the university models of Paris and Bologna, this progressive vision continues to attract international researchers and academics.

The stunning contemporary blue glass Sir Duncan Rice library offers you panoramic views over the city, beach and beyond and excellent study facilities. The city is compact, architecturally interesting and it offers four shopping centres, restaurants for all tastes and budgets, museums, galleries, a beach, walks and plenty to do
