Course Summary

Develop in-depth knowledge and skills of research methods. Prepare yourself for an academic or professional career with a focus on policy and the environment.

On completion of this course you will be able to demonstrate:

  • a critical understanding of research-based sustainability literature across a range of disciplines
  • comprehension of the relationships between theory and practice in the field of sustainability
  • thorough and in-depth understanding of key debates relating to environmental challenges, and the resilience and adaptability of human systems.
  • detailed and comprehensive understanding of current issues across disciplines within the theme of sustainability studies

The course aims to prepare you for a career as a professional researcher in either an academic or non-academic environment by developing your core research skills. You will be encouraged to review and critically evaluate approaches to research and their application, and to identify and investigate your own original research questions.

South West Doctoral Training Partnership

This MRes is recognised by the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC), specifically, as part of the larger South West Doctoral Training Partnership (SWDTP). It can be taken as a course in its own right, or if you hold an SWDTP studentship you can take the 1+3 (MRes + PhD) pathway.

If you wish to be considered for a 1+3 SWDTP studentship, then you must apply for your preferred PhD route and not the stand alone MRes. You should follow our how to apply and funding guidelines.

For those holding a 1+3 SWDTP studentship, progression from the MRes to the MPhil or PhD stage is dependent on an acceptable level of achievement.

Modules

The module will fulfil the ESRC requirement for training in core research design, collection and analysis skills by addressing the on the ground characteristics and challenges of 'doing' interdisciplinary research. On completion of the module students will be able to critically assess concepts such as interdisciplinarity, multidisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity. They will have an acquired knowledge and practical skills of how a range of research methods can be integrated in an ethically sound manner to examine interdisciplinary problems, and will have developed an appreciation of the importance of pertinent inter-disciplinary thinking.
