Course Summary

PhD in the Institute of Microbiology and Infection will provide you with with the necessary skills to contribute to research of viruses, parasites, fungi and bacteria. With one of the largest groupings of microbiologists in the world we are at the vanguard of innovative research into combatting antimicrobial and antibiotic resistance. We do this with a three-pronged approach: diagnosis , treatment, prevention. You will work collaboratively alongside microbiologists, immunologists, biochemists and chemists to produce original globally leading research, with the ultimate goal to find solutions to global challenges. This program will provide you with high quality research training to enable you to conduct independent investigative research. We work with a range of bacterial and viral pathogens and study mechanisms of pathogenesis, host-pathogen interactions, pathogen transmission and drug resistance. As one of the largest communities of microbiologists in Europe, the Institute of Microbiology and Infection offers unrivalled opportunities to build a research career. You will work closely with your supervisory team who will help you clarify your project and support your development. Your thesis will represent an original contribution to knowledge and demonstrate independent judgement.

A primary focus of research within IMI is combatting the global threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). By taking a multi-disciplinary approach involving genomics, bacterial genetics, molecular microbiology, structural biology and mathematical modelling our aim is to tackle significant global health-care challenges such as tuberculosis, pnuemonia, fungal pathogens, gastrointestinal infection, blood stream infections, and health-care associated infections.
