Music PhD - Musicology

UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL
Overall Rating

It is stimulating, multidisciplinary, and life-enhancing. I wish I'd embarked on academic research earlier. In general staff/PGR interaction is splendid which improves the experience. Additionally, opportunities for involvement in general university representation abound, as do opportunities to contribute to public engagement activities.

Student Union

Very good - and improving.

Clubs and Societies

Societies generally excellent, a panoply to suit (almost) everyone. I know nothing about sport, being uninterested in any of it.

Uni Facilities

Excellent, and plans for a new library are in train. It is a pity that my department's facilities are somewhat lacking in technological facilities, and there has been a temporary issue regarding Arts PGR study facilities - though the latter is now being resolved.

Course and Lecturers

Supervision, and opportunities for peer/staff interaction of research are excellent.

City Life

As a homeowner, 30 miles away, location is not ideal for the university. Travel is expensive, and parking (on street) more so. Journey times can vary from 30 to 150 minutes each way, dependent on time and traffic conditions.

Job Prospects

It is generally good - though as a mature student much does not apply to me.

Student Support

I think it is very good - though, again as a mature student after a career elsewhere, I am quite good at search out and accessing any help I need.
