Course Summary

This part-time master’s award offers you a career-enhancing and attractive way of supporting and accrediting your Continuous Personal and Professional Development (CPPD) in Education. The emphasis is on flexibility, collegiality, collaboration, with a focus on practice and a critical approach to professionalism, underpinned by applied research.

The MEd uses a suite of modules delivered across 3 semesters, at the UCLan campus in Preston and in selected partner colleges. It is linked to a range of professional development awards providing flexible access and progression. You choose modules to complement your professional needs, culminating in an applied project for the MEd. The master’s in education programme has interim target and exit awards of PG Certificate and PG Diploma.

Learning Environment and Assessment

Assessment is varied and encourages creativity in assignments so that assessment acts as a vehicle supporting and structuring learning: dialogue, critical discussions, presentations, academic papers, posters, reflective writing, portfolios, annotated bibliographies and academic papers form some of the range of assessments within the programme.


This is a work-based part-time award. Participants are all studying part-time and working within educational settings.

Graduates from the award have gone on to become Directors and champions of Teaching and Learning, achieve promotions, to complete professional doctorates and have made significant impact on their careers in HE, Lifelong learning settings and as managers within Schools.

The module is useful for those who have some idea of what area they would like to research, but are less clear about how to do that research. Building on ED4995 (Designing and Planning your Research Project) and other level 7 modules, it considers a range of approaches to conducting research and then methods that may be used, such as survey, case study and experimental research. It then explores the methods or techniques used in research, such as interview, questionnaire design, observations, etc. It also considers the ethical and practical issues that may emerge around your choice of approach and the ways in which you will collect data in your individual project.

Entry requirements

This Masters award is a taught award linked to continuing professional development with a focus on practitioner research. Participants on the in-house programme will normally be employed by the University of Central Lancashire or in an associated HEI or college of FE and will have demonstrated ability to cope with master’s level study either through APEL or previous qualifications, eg PG Certificate. Access to the programme will be open to new participants with previous appropriate PG Diploma or PG Certificates from other institutions but degree and extent of APL/credits will be agreed on an individual case by case basis. Entry requirements onto the PG Diploma without a PG certificate will include for example: First degree or equivalent professional qualification plus related work experience; Successful experience of level 3 final year study in last 5 years plus related work experience.
