Course Summary

Overview

Do you believe that a prevention is better than a cure? Are you interested in finding out about the wide range of global diseases and how you can help to prevent outbreaks? Then look no further than our online MSc Infection Control.

On this advanced-level postgraduate course you will learn how to prevent and control the spreading of infection. You will gain the latest knowledge and understanding of infection control practice, enabling you to make improvements in your chosen area. You’ll learn how to develop and implement strategies to reduce the spread of infection and respond appropriately to future outbreaks. You’ll improve your ability to advise policy makers and other clinicians on matters relating to infection.

Throughout this course, you’ll explore a broad range of topics including:

  • the science of identifying and isolating pathogenic organisms to assist in the diagnosis, management and treatment of patients
  • the scientific concepts underpinning infection control and prevention
  • the impact of infectious diseases and their control in a variety of settings

Finally, you’ll get an opportunity to conduct an original research project on a topic of interest aligned to an area that is of relevance to your industry.

Teaching methods

Studying online gives you the freedom to study when and where it suits you – at home, during your lunch hour or anywhere else you have internet access.

Our courses are delivered through a virtual learning environment (VLE) instead of a traditional campus. This means you will have access to your study materials 24/7, including:

  • multimedia lecturecasts made up of written content, short videos, animation, audio recordings, infographics, short tests and mini-assignments
  • discussion forums for you to chat about the course content with fellow students
  • live Q&A sessions with your tutors
  • a comprehensive eLibrary of textbooks and academic journals
  • support from academic staff and your dedicated Student Support team

To ensure you receive the support you need from your tutor, we cap our class sizes at 20 students.

Assessment methods

Rather than fretting about exams, you will be assessed exclusively through assignments. This can be by engaging in discussion forums throughout your modules, completing reflective journal entries, or by submitting longer written pieces.

We are committed to providing frequent and transparent feedback through the following ways:

  • Our assessment criteria are designed to be simple and transparent.
  • You will always be aware of your current provisional grade, right from the start of the programme.
  • You will be able to view your marks clearly in your gradebook whenever you log onto the learning platform.
  • There is a 7-day turnaround for marking and feedback of assessed work.
  • You will have regular contact with your Student Support team, with whom you can discuss any concerns as soon as they arise.

Career prospects

We are dedicated to improving employability amongst our graduates. Our online courses give you the opportunity to improve your career prospects and earning potential with a mix of key skills that are directly transferable to the workplace; such as report writing, communication, time management and critical thinking.

As a graduate of our MSc Infection Control you may already be working within a specialist infection control role. Our course will help you gain a more senior position in Infection Control, Environmental Health and many other healthcare professions.

Modules

This in-depth module introduces you to both the theoretical and practical issues in the research process, with a strong emphasis on health and social care. By the end, you’ll have developed a critical awareness of the ethical issues that can arise and be able to successfully demonstrate both quantitative and qualitative analysis upon completion.
