This compulsory core course of the MEd and MSc TESOL offers an overview of key approaches to describing language in context and considers how this is relevant to the language learning classroom. The course focuses on approaches to discourse analysis, descriptions of lexico-grammatical features and of aspects of phonolgy and phonetics.

Entry requirements

2.1 Honours degree or non-UK equivalent in English, education, applied linguistics, translation, English literature, TESOL/TEFL (UG) or TCSOL (Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages). Modern foreign languages other than English are considered. Those with a degree in business English are not normally considered and should apply for the MSc Educational Studies.
