Course Summary

The Masters in Land & Hydrographic Surveying will introduce you to the surveying discipline and prepare you for employment in the industry. Engineering and land survey are fundamental to the design, construction and navigation of infrastructure projects from small to national scale such as buildings, road and rail networks. Hydrographic Surveyors contribute to safety of navigation and port management for seas, rivers and lakes, and underwater infrastructure projects such as pipelines and offshore wind turbines. This programme is ideal if you are seeking employment in the geospatial industry to support construction and mapping projects both onshore and offshore.

Students will also achieve PgCert and PgDip exit awards during this course.

There is currently a high demand for surveyors both in the UK and internationally. In addition to the offshore energy industry, land surveyors are in demand in many parts of the world to support mining operations and major civil engineering projects.

Modules

This module aims to equip students with the necessary knowledge and practical skills to perform basic surveying and data collection operations. Aligned to guidance from professional surveying bodies this course will show how basic spatial data is collected and the potential varying quality that Geomaticians must be aware of when using such data for analysis and decision making. The course will: Introduce the fundamental concepts of land surveying; Explain the design and operation of instruments such as Total Stations and Levels; Provide hands-on practical experience in land surveying; Integrate authentic learning by applying theory to real world surveying problems; Introduce Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and their use in land surveying; Introduce basic survey computations, processing and adjustment methods as appropriate; Introduce instrument calibration, adjustment and verification methods as appropriate; Introduce data processing and CAD software for land surveying; Introduce the concept of reflective learning of your own survey practice.

Entry requirements

For the MSc, normally a 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent qualification in an appropriate discipline, such as Geography, Earth/Environmental Science, Mathematics, Engineering, etc. Those with lower level qualifications, or those with experience in the surveying industry may be admitted to the Certificate or Diploma in the first instance and, subject to performance, can progress to the MSc. All candidates must have basic proficiency in mathematics.
