Course Summary

This course is ideal for an industry-based project and/or student. This programme offers the opportunity to gain a qualification by following a structured route in scientific research. Students can select from a wide range of theory courses appropriate to their individual research topic across the disciplines of chemical and life sciences. It is suitable for students who want to gain a postgraduate research qualification and strengthen their insight into the mechanics of research from both the literature and experimental perspectives.

The aims of the programme are to: provide a critical understanding of the knowledge base required for a proposed research project; provide and build upon analytical, conceptual and research skills; achieve an understanding of the research methods appropriate to the chosen field; and undertake a critical investigation of an approved topic.

Students are assessed through coursework and a dissertation or a published original research paper. This programme offers opportunities in the public and private sectors.

The project is the major vehicle for students to demonstrate their capacity for advanced independent learning. It serves to develop students' critical skills and capabilities. The overarching aim is to develop the candidates ability to make an innovative contribution to applied research within the broad discipline of science and to assess the candidate's ability to work independently in the analysis of a novel problem. The project will comprise practical investigation of an appropriate subject. Focusing the project on the solution of an applied problem facilitates the identification of a suitable topic and the necessary data/ analysis that is needed for successful completion.

Entry requirements

Applicants should either have a BSc honours degree normally at 2.1 or above, or equivalent qualification in a relevant science subject or substantial industrial experience and supervisory responsibility. Applicants from other backgrounds are considered.
