Course Summary

This course is for you if you want a sound knowledge and understanding of how psychology can be applied in an occupational context. This BPS-accredited postgraduate distance learning degree will equip you with an excellent level of knowledge and understanding of a broad range of topics in Occupational Psychology, including an appreciation of theory, an awareness of the strengths and limitations of research evidence, and how research can be used to help organisations and its employees. It also provides stage one towards the BPS Qualification in Occupational Psychology.

You will learn how to apply occupational psychology methodologies to solve real-life problems in organisations. Core psychological theories will be illustrated with the latest research and examples of practice. You will develop a range of applied skills including interviewing, evaluation and questionnaire design. A range of assessments are used across the course including case studies, presentations (via Skype) and research reports.

In this module you will explore psychological approaches to learning, training and development in the workplace, focusing on learning theories, skill acquisition and the organisational and social factors in training and development. We will look at the importance of the training cycle, from needs analysis through design, implementation, transfer to evaluation. We will also consider how training can be organised to bring about effective learning, and look at psychological research on the role of different training media. We will also discuss employability, trainability and theories of occupational choice and career development.

Entry requirements

Students need second class honours degree in Psychology that confers Graduate Basis for Chartership with the British Psychological Society (BPS). They must also have some occupational experience.
