Course Summary

This course is for you if you are interested in studying media, communication and sociology at an advanced level and learning from some of the leading researchers in this academic field. This multi-disciplinary degree will provide you with a unique academic challenge if you are looking to develop your career in media, creative and cultural industries, or build a future career in academia. The course combines cultural studies with media and sociology and explores processes and activities, from local to global levels.

You will be assessed through a combination of essays, online assignments and your dissertation of approximately 10,000-12,000 words. Successful completion of this course will demonstrate to potential employers that you have a high level of knowledge in the field, and as our course has a strong emphasis on research methods and training, you will develop a range of transferable skills which are directly applicable to the professional world.

This module will give you an overview of media and cultural studies research across a plethora of fields. You will be immersed in the central debates and issues that have shaped the historical developments of these fields. This will include the economic, political, cultural and technological forces that shape practices of each field in social context. This module belongs to semester one.

Students need 2:1 degree from a British university in Media/Communication Studies, Politics, and Sociology, Social/Cultural/Political Theory or Cultural Studies and equivalent academic or professional qualification. Special consideration is given to to applicants who have significant work experience in a relevant field.
