Postgraduate Reviews of Courses at University of Leicester

Reflecting on my time at the University of Leicester during my LLM studies, I find myself often recounting the wonderful experiences I encountered, which shaped not just my academic journey but also my professional outlook.

Best aspects for me:

One of the most remarkable aspects of my studies was the caliber of the lecturers. They were not just educators but true masters in their fields, often authors of seminal books and recognised experts. Their depth of knowledge and passion for their subjects was infectious, making each lecture a stimulating experience. This academic excellence was a cornerstone of my educational journey.

Furthermore, the support and guidance provided by the university were invaluable. Whether it was through structured career fairs that opened doors to various opportunities or the practical support like the availability of 48-hour loaner laptops, which were a godsend when my own laptop faltered during critical essay submission deadlines.

Challenges:

However, my experience wasn't without its challenges. A notable issue, which isn't exclusive to the University of Leicester but rather a systemic one in higher education, is the lack of individualised career focus. While there were teams like career support available, the onus was largely on students to reach out for help. This setup can be daunting, especially for those who are naturally more reserved or hesitant in seeking assistance.

Additionally, the university's policy on late submissions left a lasting impression on me, and not in a positive way. The rigidness of the penalty system, where I faced a 10-mark deduction for a mere three-minute delay in submission, was particularly harsh. This experience, while intended to instil a lesson in punctuality and responsibility, adversely impacted my grade and felt disproportionately punitive.

In summary, my time at the University of Leicester was a blend of exceptional academic enrichment tempered by some systemic challenges. The strengths of the program, particularly the expertise of the faculty and the supportive academic environment, were significant. However, the aspects that needed improvement, particularly in providing more accessible individualised support and a more flexible approach to academic policies, were areas that left room for reflection and growth. read full review
