Postgraduate students at the University of London Institute in Paris can obtain an advanced degree, while studying in one of the world’s most beautiful cities, Paris.
Students can apply for a Master’s degree in Urban History and Culture, or carry out Doctoral research in French history, culture, literature or translation studies.
Students on the MA Urban History and Culture course have the unique opportunity to choose a full year study in Paris, or a split-site study between Paris and London. This one-year programme is offered in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London and allows students to utilise resources in London, such as the Senate House and Queen Mary libraries.
Postgraduate
The University of London Institute in Paris is home to around 200 students, of which approximately 80 are postgraduates, representing 40% of the student community.

Courses are tutored by an experienced faculty team, composed of lecturers from both the University of Institute in Paris and Queen Mary University of London. All lecturers are experts in their field, with many having worked and taught overseas. With this experience, they share academic knowledge and key sector insights through a global perspective.
Courses are taught through a variety of methods including intensive seminars, hands-on workshops, site visits, and guest lectures. This provides an intellectually stimulating environment, to encourage critical thinking and reflection.
There is a maximum of 25 postgraduate students on each yearly intake. Therefore, students benefit from a supportive seminar environment and receive a high-quality learning experience.
Admission typically requires a second-class degree in a relevant subject at undergraduate level.
Postgraduate courses are taught entirely in English and there is no French language requirement. Prospective students will need to provide evidence of English language proficiency if they are not a native English speaker.

For those students with a strong wanderlust, there is the opportunity to travel across Europe using the Eurostar and other interstate rail services.
There are a range of accommodation options in Paris, from studio flats to shared accommodation.
Postgraduate students may wish to live at Cité Internationale Universitaire in southern Paris. Its 40 residences are open to students from all over Paris, and priority is given to postgraduate students.
Students in Paris are encouraged to apply for the housing benefit Caisse des Allocation Familiales (CAF). Successful applicants will receive a monthly payment to help with the cost of accommodation.
Facilities
The University of London Institute in Paris campus is situated within a beautiful 19th century building that has been thoroughly modernised with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.
The university library is thoughtfully designed with individual and group study spaces. Libraries have a wide selection of books, journals, and research papers for students to use during their studies. The library also offers a large archive of digital resources, where students have access to the online libraries of the University of London and Queen Mary University of London.
Computing facilities throughout the university include computer workstations, charging points for laptops, and Wi-Fi throughout campus. Both inside and outside the building, students benefit from the university’s innovative Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), a resource offering study support and course management tools.

There are many funding opportunities for postgraduate students at University of London Institute in Paris to assist with fees.
There is a discount for University of London alumni which is available to postgraduate students. Eligible students will be awarded a discount in tuition fees for their master’s programme.
Each year, two students on the MA Urban History and Culture programme are awarded the University of London Scholarship. Both students will receive part or full coverage of tuition fees for each academic year of study. This award is based on academic ability – students must apply directly to the University of London Institute in Paris.
Students can also apply for external scholarships to fund their postgraduate course. For example, through research councils in their field of study.
Students benefit from small-group seminars, where they develop both empirical understanding of subject matter and a methodological approach to learning.
Students will be expected to engage in self-directed study with the aid of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), and must choose between compulsory and elective modules, with a 15,000-word dissertation as the main method of assessment.
Research
The University of London Institute in Paris is a research-driven institution, offering supervision to students wishing to undertake a MPhil or PhD in one of the university’s many areas of expertise.
Postgraduate students have access to the University of London School of Advanced Studies, which offers extensive library resources and research training to support postgraduate students during their degree.
Students can study either full or part-time and complete a degree in three to six years, allowing students the opportunity to organise their postgraduate studies around existing work or personal commitments. Work schedules will need to be discussed with the University of London Institute in Paris before applying.
Distance learning
The University of London Institute in Paris does not currently offer distance learning courses, but it is possible to study a University of London degree remotely with the University of London Worldwide.
