Course Summary

This course is designed to provide students with knowledge in two complementary disciplines, stressing the challenges posed by pathogens and how they shape immune responses. The MSc is offered in a school that has a very sound teaching and research base, with expertise in the host-pathogen interface. The ongoing interactions between the microbiologists and immunologists within the school will guarantee exposure to the forefront of research into host-pathogen interactions. The skills gained from this MSc Microbiology and Immunology will provide a solid portfolio of knowledge and practical skills at the host-pathogen interface, which will prepare for a wide range of career paths. MSc graduates from the School of Life Sciences go on to establish a range of successful careers. Many of them pursue a higher degree such as a PhD in very strong research laboratories in the UK, Europe or the US; others take up positions as trainee diagnostic microbiologists, immunologists or biomedical scientists (BMS); while others gain employment in industry such as large pharmaceutical companies or other private enterprises.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a 2:1 - at least an upper second class honours degree or international equivalent from an approved institution. The course is also offered to medical and veterinary graduates wishing to pursue a career in Immunology or Microbiology. Applicants with a lower second class degree (or international equivalent) may be considered on an individual basis.
