Our Statistics MSc will provide you with the essential knowledge and skills relevant for a career as a professional statistician or researcher.

As the data we generate increases, so does the global demand for analysts who can apply modern statistical methods, to make sense of it. In-depth understanding and skills in statistical techniques have a broad range of applications in the modern world. Thanks to the more widespread use of data and statistical analysis required to interpret it, career opportunities for statisticians are expected to grow in areas including:

Course structure

You'll study two compulsory modules covering the fundamentals in statistics, which provide the basis for the remaining optional modules. These include, amongst others:

  • This course gives you the flexibility to tailor the degree to your interests and career aspirations.

    You will develop advanced statistical skills and knowledge which will enable you to test theories, learn how to interpret large and complex data, and to extract relevant insights from it. The masters will enable you to develop computing skills in using R too.

    In the summer you'll complete a dissertation. This will be in collaboration with staff from within the school, often led by experts from the internationally recognised Statistics and Probability section, or one of our industry partners such as

    International students who complete an eligible degree programme in the UK on a student visa can apply to stay and work in the UK after their course under the Graduate immigration route. Eligible courses at the University of Nottingham include bachelors, masters and research degrees, and PGCE courses.

    Modules

    In this module, the fundamental principles and techniques underlying modern statistical and data analysis will be introduced. You will gain experience in using a statistical package and interpreting its output. The course will cover a 'common core' consisting of: statistical concepts and methods; linear models; probability techniques; Markov chains.

    Entry requirements

    A high 2:2 in mathematics or a closely related subject with substantial mathematical content. Some prior knowledge of statistics would be helpful but not essential to start the course.
