Course Summary

This programme is designed for experienced professional choreographers, dancers, performance makers and interdisciplinary artists who wish to deepen their choreographic or performance practice through studio-based enquiry and research.

You will also gain a range of reflective and critical skills including writing and documentation strategies, advanced dramaturgy, and the capacity to understand your work and interests in broader political, cultural and artistic frameworks.

How you'll learn

This programme has a flexible and supportive approach which makes it possible for you to strengthen your professional practices while working towards a higher degree.

‘Practice as research’ is a growing area for experienced dance artists, choreographers and performers who want to deepen their practice and strengthen their profile. Run by leading artist-scholars, the course supports enquiry through studio practice and research informed by contemporary theoretical concerns.

You will be supported in the development and presentation of a comprehensive choreographic and/or performance portfolio, which allows you to practice, think, reflect, articulate and present your ideas and independent research.

We also have excellent links with dance companies and creative organisations. In easy reach of London's vibrant dance scene, the campus has superb studios, an excellent new library and a state-of-the-art theatre for dance students.

Career options

This course offers professional development for independent artists and choreographers. Some graduates follow careers in research or teaching, or go onto further academic study such as a practice-led PhD.

Modules

This module sits at the heart of the Roehampton Postgraduate Dance provision. It is designed to investigate ideas and principles that underpin research practices, and to give students the opportunity to apply and test these principles through their own research and/or practice. The students will explore processes of knowledge generation in dance, and will develop an awareness of how methodological approaches enable independent and diverse research practices. The module aims to inform and empower students by investigating the foundations of existing dance research methodologies, disciplines and approaches - dance analysis, ethnography, philosophy, history, postcolonial studies, choreography and practice as research - and to inspire students to conceptualise, research and carry out independent projects related to their fields of study.
