Course Summary

This postgraduate qualification gives you the tools to build a successful career in teaching while providing a holistic view of the profession; you will look at the child, curriculum and teacher. The programme is designed for those intending to teach French, German or Spanish as their subject specialism; all students must be able to offer French as at least their second language. The aim is to give you an understanding of the way modern foreign languages are taught in schools, including the use of the target language as the principal means of classroom communication.

You will be encouraged to try out a wide range of approaches to teaching, as well as strategies for organising the classroom for effective learning. University sessions include a large amount of practically based activities to help you develop your skills. You will have the opportunity to acquire an understanding of the demands of the National Curriculum orders for modern foreign languages. The work in schools will be closely linked with the university-based sessions so that you will have the opportunity to use a range of up-to-date language resources, including ICT, to set up active and engaging learning activities.

Modules

The Professional Studies module provides a unifying strand to the programme as a whole and ensures that the subjects are placed in a whole-school and education system context. All teachers, regardless of their subject specialism, are first and foremost teachers per se, and must demonstrate professionalism and the skills of reflective practice; the PS module aims to define these concepts and to tackle the generic aspects of being a professional and reflective teacher. This is done in a deliberate and cross-curricular way, bringing together students from across the range of subject disciplines whilst focusing and building on the students? own experiences in school. In this way, they benefit from both specialist subject support and from the range of perspectives applicable to other subjects.

Entry requirements

Students should have a degree with French, German or Spanish as a major component. The ability to offer a second language is essential. We also welcome applications from native speakers of these languages who have a degree in another subject. At interview, candidates will be required to demonstrate their spoken and written skills in the languages they are offering. Students need to hold and be able to provide certificated evidence of having an undergraduate degree conferred by a United Kingdom higher education institution or an equivalent qualification. Most successful applicants will have a 2:2 degree classification or better. Relevant experience includes work with children or young people, or work developing your knowledge, skills and experience relevant to the subject you wish to teach. Have achieved at least a grade C or above in both Mathematics and English Language GCSEs (or approved equivalents).
