Civil Engineering MEng

UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD
Overall Rating

Very good outside of my course. However I would change a lot about my course and it seems like the Department do not care too much about students and only concentrate on research which more often than not you do not see.

Accommodation

I went for the cheapest accommodation (Crewe flats) which was therefore shared facilities with both bathrooms and kitchens shared. Very nice and very spacious rooms. Had a big garden in the enclave together with tennis courts! Very close to the main accommodation as well.

Course and Lecturers

Most of my lecturers are new to their modules this year and they are very poor with delivery of lectures and providing resources for the course. One lecturer in particular teaches us computer programming and at the start of the module he tells us about the average mark (20%) and therefore most of us will fail and so theres not much point turning up. This is simply shocking from someone who i'm paying to teach me. Another lecturer expects us to know 30 equations (no exaggeration) for a 1 hour exam in which we will use two or three equations most. He will also expect us to know dozens of design criteria for the exam despite in the field you have Eurocode booklets at your whim. Another of my lecturers sets small online exams which count for 1.5% of the module yet take 3-4 hours to take which is a bad way of spending valuable time which you could be using to learn 30 equations! There are a few exceptions to this such as the Structures modules which all seem to have exceptional teachers. However my favorite modules are now my worst due to the lecturers. One thing about the course I would say is the Matlab used. It's a relatively big chunk of two modules however Matlab is the 7th most used computer programming and more useful programmes such as Revvit are not even mentioned despite being the industries preferred platform.
