Course Summary

About this course

We're 1 of only 2 World Allergy Organisation Centres of Excellence in the UK.

Develop your professional practice and improve your patient outcomes with this part-time or full-time, flexible PGDip Allergy course. We'll ensure you can translate current best practice into improved patient care.

This diploma comprehensively covers allergic disease in both paediatric and adult patients and is suitable if you're working in a hospital or community, as a doctor, nurse, dietitian, pharmacist or scientist. It’s our ambition that you leave this PGDip allergy course as a leader in real-world allergy care, able to disseminate knowledge on to your teams.

The course is highly flexible, both in how you study and what you study. You can choose to study part-time over 2 to 4 years, or full-time for 1 year.

Our intensive, condensed modules allow you to attend in person in blocks of 3 to 4 days, with self-study between modules supported through our online learning environment.

You can choose to focus on:

  • allergic airways disease
  • skin and drug allergy
  • food allergy
  • clinical research skills
  • teaching the teachers to teach
  • designing your own learning experience in allergy to benefit your work needs

On-site teaching takes place at one of the UK’s leading teaching hospitals, Southampton General Hospital. The course lecturers are all actively involved in clinical practice or research.

Course lead

This PGDip Allergy course is led by Professor Judith Holloway, who was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship in 2017 for her work on this course. This award recognises individuals who have made an outstanding impact on student outcomes and the teaching profession in higher education.

This PGDip Allergy course is aimed at healthcare professionals including GPs, hospital-based doctors, nurses, dietitians and scientists who are involved with adult and paediatric patients with allergy. It’s our ambition to create tomorrow’s leaders in the field of allergy management.

As well as giving you hands-on, practical skills this course will:

  • develop your problem-solving and research evidence skills
  • make you part of a community of allergy specialists, learning from the experience of your peers around the world, as well as our staff
  • develop your leadership skills in clinical allergy and allergy-related issues
  • give you strategies for your continuing professional development and lifelong learning
  • give you the skills to teach your colleagues, which will improve your clinical service delivery

The Foundations of Allergic Disease module gives an overview of the generation of normal and allergic immune responses that lead to disease. Clinical allergic diseases are introduced, and appropriate diagnostic and management options outlined. The basis of skin prick testing and the use of medical devices appropriate for the treatment of allergic disease will be explained, and the techniques demonstrated. A range of study skills for masters level are introduced with practical sessions where appropriate.
