Course Summary

This course draws on the expertise of our globally recognised academic staff in the University of Stirling’s Behavioural Science Centre – the only behavioural economics group in Scotland. It’s a research hub which enables economics, psychology, management and policy-design to be integrated into the course.

You’ll explore the core theory and methods of behavioural science and behavioural economics, and how these can be applied to business and policy-relevant issues and critical problems in the business world. Graduates with these relevant behavioural science skills are highly valued in management roles.

Course objectives

This course will help you to develop key skills and gain practical experience in Behavioural Science including:

  • Core training in areas of psychological science most relevant to business and policy
  • In-depth knowledge of the key concepts of behavioural economics
  • How behavioural science can be applied to business and policy questions
  • Sound understanding of growing areas such as experimental approaches to business and policy questions and strategies to enable behaviour change
  • Detailed statistical and methodological training
  • The design and analysis of surveys and survey data
  • Using advanced experimental and empirical techniques
  • Presenting research confidently
  • Conducting independent research projects that test hypotheses in applied settings.

This course provides a detailed grounding in key measurement and survey analysis methods of relevance to M-level students in psychology. It will address issues such as the limits of self-report and the use of naturalistic assessment and biosocial surveys. The use of subjective and psychometric scales and behavioural and biological measures are becoming increasingly common in business and economics and offer a key point of intersection between behavioural science and these disciplines. Such measures can be used in many different designs in behavioural science, including studies that seek to explain an important variable measured by self-report (such as health or well-being) or studies that seek to use self-reported variables as explanatory variables.
