University of the Arts London (UAL) is one of the world’s leading and most prestigious arts universities, maintaining an internationally renowned list of alumni. Being located in London, it is an ideal place to study a postgraduate qualification and get connected to a thriving creative sector.
With modern campus sites spread across London, UAL offers over 100 taught postgraduate degree courses at the university’s six specialist colleges and institute:
Camberwell College of Arts
Central Saint Martins
Chelsea College of Arts
London College of Communication
London College of Fashion
Wimbledon College of Arts
UAL Creative Computing Institute.
The range in courses is expansive, whether students are interested in studying art, design, screen, fashion, communication, media or performing arts.
Postgraduate
With 2,400 postgraduate-level students, UAL’s postgraduate community is the largest in Europe. It is an active community which encourages collaboration and cross-disciplinary practice, while supporting an inclusive and welcoming culture of learning. Postgraduate students form a confident and interconnected network of pioneers and innovators who will become the visionary professionals of tomorrow.
The university organises regular postgraduate pop-up events, seminars, screenings, and performances, connecting students with UAL’s expanded networks of alumni and professional partners. Postgraduate students can apply to the university for funding and support with organising academic and cultural events.
UAL’s six specialist colleges and its Creative Computing Institute offer a wide selection of postgraduate certificates, diplomas, master’s degrees and research programmes. Many courses are available with flexible study options, and students can find specific information about each individual course on the university website.
Students can choose from a range of study modes, including full-time programmes, part-time programmes, and online study. Some courses are also available at different sites, providing students with a range of options to suit their lifestyle and practical requirements.
Academic staff at the university have a wide variety of interests and expertise, and plenty of real-world experience. Classes combine theory with practical coursework, and extra support comes from academic lecturers and leading professionals who often visit the university to give talks.
Towards the end of a course, most students undertake a final major project. The nature of the project varies from course to course and is often a dissertation or research project combining theory and practice.
Postgraduate entry requirements vary depending on the specific course of study. For all programmes, a relevant honours degree or equivalent academic qualification is required. UAL is interested in attracting the most creative and innovative students, so assessment of portfolio design work, proposals and personal statements are a key factor in a successful application.
However, it’s also possible to qualify for a postgraduate course at UAL without an honours degree, or equivalent international qualification. If a student is able to demonstrate exceptional ability through their past achievements and experience, it’s possible to be admitted through Accreditation of Prior (Experiential) Learning (AP(E)L). This is typically achieved through evidence of relevant academic or professional experience, a high quality personal statement, or strong references (either academic or professional) – or a combination of the above.
Students can learn more about postgraduate study at UAL on the website, or to explore types of postgraduate courses and learn more about requirements and funding options. Students can contact the university admissions office if they have further questions.
