Course Summary

Overview

It is estimated that the number of people living with dementia in the UK will rise by 35 per cent to more than one million by 2025, according to Alzheimer's Research UK. If you are interested in taking a progressive approach to helping people with dementia and similar conditions, our MSc Dementia Care helps you gain the specialist skills you will need.

You will learn from tutors with many years of experience in clinical, cultural and academic sectors. They are leaders in dementia research and have designed a course that emphasises innovation and creativity in its study of a range of dementia-related conditions. This will give you an in-demand range of skills and experiences that will help you to lead in the field of dementia care.

Course detail

On this MSc Dementia Care you will examine contemporary thinking and analyse current care and services. Your goal will be to build an evidence base for best practice.

We emphasise the importance of creative approaches to research and development. There may be opportunities to work with input from artists and designers, as well as from scientists, to develop treatments that focus on the link between creativity and health.

To this end, your studies at the Dementia Care Centre will include influences from a wide range of disciplines, including:

  • psychology
  • design
  • music
  • nursing
  • hospitality

By drawing on these varied fields of knowledge, this approach will help you to drive innovative solutions to the challenges posed by dementia care. You will have opportunities to join projects and placements at progressive care homes, where you can help to design unique settings and services for people with dementia and their carers.

This course helps you to explore high-quality, ambitious, evidence-based solutions for improving the lives of people who suffer with dementia. Our aim is to empower you to become a positive leader in dementia care practice and service management.

Study & career progression

This course will give you the skills and knowledge to seek employment in areas including:

  • direct management of dementia care delivery
  • service commissioning
  • voluntary organisations
  • the charity sector

While studying for this degree you might discover an area you would like to specialise in. Doctoral study at UWL will help you develop the skills you need to work as a successful researcher.
