Course Summary

This course will teach you how to build a design-focused business from the ground up. If you work for (or have experience with) a design studio or creative start-up, you will find this course especially useful. The course has been developed to complement the incubation of a business. You will cover research and analysis, the application of knowledge in entrepreneurship, governance and operations, plus innovation management and negotiation. You will undertake a work placement in a relevant business, which will help you to develop the key attributes of a successful professional, such as independence, entrepreneurship and negotiation skills.

This course will give you: the opportunity to develop an industry-aligned design business; a collaboration with a range of design industry partners; the opportunity to establish a network of industry connections; valuable peer relationships; entrepreneurial skills. The course has a placement unit in the first semester, in which you will work on a work placement, internship or a ‘live’ freelance brief. You will be able to learn in an exciting and dynamic manner, alongside established industry practitioners in live situations in studios, galleries and on collaborative projects both in the UK and abroad. For your final project, you will have the chance to apply the knowledge gained throughout the course to develop a robust business plan. This project will then be used to launch your creative initiative, which could be anything from starting a design agency or launching an app prototype to securing funding for a fashion brand.

On this course, it is essential that you have the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and other industry specialists. We will encourage and support this group work element. A high degree of self-starter motivation is also required and this will be fostered through one-to-one tutoring.

This course is designed for early-career professionals in the creative and cultural industries or in small- or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It is extremely attractive to entrepreneurial undergraduates and professionals who have studied or are working in an area of creative practice centred around design —whether that is a creative communications collective, a new design brand, or a start-up with a product that enhances society through a design initiative. Some students will join us with a single creative business idea in mind. Throughout the course, we will help you to develop this concept so that you are ready to pursue your goal after graduation. Once you complete the course, you could go on to: launch your own business; get funding for your own business and/or use your entrepreneurial skills to find a role in a creative innovation organisation.
