Course Summary

This course is a joint collaboration between the University of Winchester and the Dioceses of Winchester and Portsmouth.

The programme is aimed at Middle Leaders of Church Schools, or aspiring Middle Leaders, and will cover areas of Church School Leadership in practice. The modules have cross?-diocesan and school recognition.

You will develop a knowledge and understanding of key theoretical principles, research findings and professional issues, particularly associated with Christian approaches to leadership.

The course will consider the nature of church schools in practice, specifically exploring questions around spirituality, collective worship and community engagement. You will also consider Church school leadership in action. The aim of this latter part of the programme is for you to explore and critically engage with a repertoire of approaches for transforming leadership of Church schools.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Church School Leadership allows for a flexible range of long term and short term outcomes:

  • Students can enrol for the two modules which comprise the PgCert Church School Leadership specifically and graduate with the named exit award after one year of study
  • Existing and new MA Education students can take one of the PgCert Church School Leadership modules as part of their portfolio of 120 credits, prior to the dissertation

Graduates of this course should feel more confident and competent as Middle Leaders, or to pursue roles as Middle Leaders, of Church Schools. You may wish to progress onto the MA Education at Winchester to further develop your skills and knowledge.

This module will enable students to develop a deep knowledge and understanding of the key theoretical principles, research findings and professional issues associated with school leadership, and specifically Church School Leadership. During the module, a wide-ranging selection of leadership models will be critically explored; underpinned by current research and literature in this area. The distinctive nature of Church School Leadership and Christian models of Leadership will be investigated with university lecturers, diocesan leaders as well as current Church School leaders, who are experts in these fields. This module aims to help students to examine their own practice, and that of others, as leaders or aspiring leaders, in order to help them to develop their own model of Church School Leadership.
