MA Applied Human Rights

UNIVERSITY OF YORK
Overall Rating

The University of York has an entire support structure for students and has dedicated resources for students to use. For students like me who prefer a more peaceful vibe on campus, the University of York has one of the most conducive spaces for learning. York is a walkable city. It breathes in a small, but internationally-diverse community. This is an advantage for students who don't like the hustle and bustle of living in crowded cities.

The University of York also boasts of its excellent roster of faculty and staff. As an MA in Applied Human Rights student, I am consistently impressed by the level of instruction by my professors in the Department of Politics and the Center for Applied Human Rights (CAHR). The CAHR even hosts human rights defenders at risk from across the globe in an inclusive and holistic Protective Fellowship Scheme. This bridges the gap between theory and textbook human rights with real-work human rights issues and challenges.

As an international student, I was initially worried if I could find a community here. But, the college system in the University as well as the active student societies make me feel at home. This is crucial for international students who are adjusting to UK's culture.

The only aspect for improvement that I would recommend for the University of York is to amplify its marketing and visibility initiatives. The university already has the track record that could match other well-known universities, and I believe it's only a matter of marketing and promotion.

Accommodation

I stay in Alcuin College which is strategically located in the university's Campus West. Most of my lecture halls and classrooms are just a 5-minute walk from where I live. It is very convenient. The entire college has a relaxing vibe to it, and it hosts several occasions where residents can gather and just talk about anything. Most of the time in these gatherings, there's also free coffee and meals! These may be small gestures, but they keep the residents happy and engaged.

Wifi and other utilities are included in your rent and a regular maintenance and cleaning services are done by the property management. Overall, I truly consider this my home away from home.
