Course Summary

Develop the practical legal skills to prepare you for your law career. Working in the York St John Law Clinic will help you to develop transferable skills and experience legal practice.

Course overview

This course is authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). If you are looking to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales you have several options. This includes the new Solicitors Qualifying Examination 1 and 2 (SQE 1 and 2) which was introduced in September 2021.

This course will allow you to progress to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales by doing one of the following:

  • Completing a period of recognised training, usually a 2 year paid training contract with a law firm or other organisation authorised to provide training.
  • Qualifying through equivalent means by compiling a portfolio of work documenting at least 2 years’ experience working under the supervision of a practising solicitor in a paid or voluntary role. This could be as a paralegal or equivalent.
  • Taking the Solicitors Qualifying Examination 2 (SQE2) and completing qualifying work experience (QWE).

Teaching and learning

Teaching will consist of a mixture of lectures and small group workshops. This includes sessions with staff from across the university.

We encourage you to take responsibility for managing your own learning and its outcomes. Our Academic Support team can help with written English, study, research and technology skills if needed.

We keep our group sizes small so we can get to know you and support your aspirations. We deliver your modules through:

  • Lectures
  • Workshops
  • Meetings to discuss the progress of your Law Clinic cases
  • 1 to 1 supervision
