Course Summary

This course is aimed at the busy dental practitioner who wants to combine home study with treating patients under the direct clinical supervision of experienced consultants and specialists.

This two-year programme, with much of the academic delivery online has evolved from our successful three-year MSc Oral Surgery programme and has been re-designed in response to student feedback.

The course comprises of four days of supervised clinical training, with academic teaching via an online delivery model so you can study flexibly from home.

This course provides authentic clinical training and education, delivered both online and face-to-face thats aimed at preparing you to provide safe and appropriate oral surgery treatment as part of your clinical practice.

Learning and assessment

Youll start with plenary lectures and practical sessions in our state-of-the-art phantom head facility, working on a pigs head and similar systems. Youll then progress to treating live patients, under close supervision in our Dental Clinic, and be assessed by Direct Observations of Procedural Skills (DOPS).

You and your group will prepare and lead the academic aspect of the course with presentations, directed reading and case-based discussions.

Assessments focus on your higher level skills of diagnosis and planning, rather than simply remembering facts. Typical assessments include analysis of given clinical cases, case presentations, practical tests, written examinations and critical essays.

Modules

In this module you will learn to develop strategies for systematic searching of electronic databases. You will also develop your communication skills and be able to cite and reference accurately in reports.

Applicants will be qualified as a Dental Surgeon and have a licence to practice dentistry; Be registered with the General Dental Council or equivalent; Be in professional practice or have a hospital appointment while attending the course; Be registered with a Defence Union - possessing indemnity insurance with cover at an appropriate level; Possess a current certificate of immunisation against communicable disease Hepatitis B.
