The University of West London (UWL) is known as the ‘career university’ due its exceptionally high graduate employment rate and close connections with top industry employers. It has been ranked the city’s best modern non-specialist university (Complete University Guide, 2025), and is number one in London for student satisfaction (National Student Survey, 2024).
Curricula incorporate both theoretical knowledge and practical learning opportunities, with all postgraduate courses at UWL specifically designed to enable students to thrive in successful careers across industry and academia.
UWL has invested over £200 million in its campus in recent years. New state-of-the-art facilities include a radio studio, performance spaces, industry-leading training facilities, simulators, studios, labs, and a 24-hour library. Postgraduate students also have exclusive access to Rami Ranger House, a student centre which promotes research and discussion within the postgraduate community.
Study and research are divided across UWL’s three campuses. The Ealing and Brentford sites are well-served by public transport and a free shuttle bus service runs between the two. Nursing and midwifery courses are based at the Berkshire Institute for Health, in Reading, just a short train journey from London.
UWL offers a broad selection of postgraduate study programmes, with 89 taught courses and a range of research degrees on offer. Many courses offer industry placements, and there is an extensive selection of flexible, part-time, and blended study options, ensuring courses remain accessible to all students.
The university boasts 27 specialist research centres and groups, where researchers undertake ground-breaking work across a range of specialist subject areas. In the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, 80 percent of UWL’s research was rated as either internationally excellent or world leading.

At UWL, entry requirements vary on a course-by-course basis. As such, prospective students should consult individual course pages for specific requirements.
Generally, for taught master’s courses, students must hold a 2:1 honours degree in a related subject. For some subjects, a portfolio of work and a written statement may also be required.
The minimum entry requirement for research degrees is a 2:1 honours degree and a master’s degree awarded with a merit or distinction.
For research degrees, prospective students are encouraged to identify a potential research supervisor before submitting an application. A research proposal is also required, and this should be produced in consultation with the identified supervisor.
All applications are considered on an individual basis and places may be offered based on demonstrable previous experience or training. UWL recognises equivalent qualifications from accredited overseas institutions, as well as equivalent professional qualifications.
English language
International students may need to submit proof of English language proficiency as part of their application. Requirements vary between courses, but are generally as follows:

Careers service
As soon as students start their course, they have access to the university’s expert employability service. Through this, students can access bespoke advice from experienced careers advisors, including career planning, access to placements and internships, and opportunities to develop their employability.

Students receive assistance with job applications, including CV development and help with interview preparation, and have access to a number of online careers and employability resources.

UWL Students’ Union (UWLSU) represents all the university’s students and their views while offering an array of volunteering opportunities and social events through the year.

The Vice-Chancellor's PhD Scholarships at UWL are three-year fully funded PhD scholarships. Students’ fees are covered by this scholarship, and they are awarded an annual stipend of £22,000 for their living costs. These scholarships are designed to fund innovative, rigorous, and impactful research. Key areas of research that UWL look to fund with the Vice-Chancellor’s scholarship include those which address equality, diversity, and inclusion, as well as those that are interdisciplinary in nature.

VIEW SCHOLARSHIPSTaught courses at UWL are led by experienced tutors who design their modules to specifically address contemporary issues in a way that prepares students for specialised careers. Students are expected to attend weekly seminars and lectures, usually in person, but this varies depending on the course structure.
UWL has an outstanding national and international reputation for progressive and practice-based research. Its research spans a wide array of specialties, including engineering, computing, hospitality, aviation, health, law, music, and media. UWL encourages research which has practical and global impact. The university’s 27 research centres and groups concentrate on socio-economic and creative issues, leading to innovative solutions for real-world challenges.
Research students take part in a programme of training seminars to fully prepare them for their research, and a bursary is available to fund conferences and other development activities. Research candidates are also provided with myriad opportunities to discuss and present their research as they progress through the doctoral journey.
Some postgraduate courses at UWL offer blended or a partially remote study option. Prospective students should consult individual course pages for full details on distance learning opportunities.
Currently, distance learning is only available in PgCert Professional Academic Practice at postgraduate level. However, a number of part-time courses are on offer, requiring attendance at the university once or twice a week, depending on the module of study. Flexible blended learning, part-time Saturday study and evening classes are also available for certain courses.
