About Postgraduate Interior Design

Interior design is a subject that brings together art and science toward the creation of attractive, healthy, functional spaces. Postgraduate students of this discipline will build skills in planning, research, construction management, design, and even psychology and neuroscience, to create interior environments.

Interior designers work closely with architects, property developers, construction managers, tradespeople and designers to achieve their goals. Graduates might work with large firms or independent design consultancies.

There are over 30 programmes to choose from at postgraduate level in the UK. Students could study interior design in isolation or in combination with areas like architecture.

What to expect

Entry requirements vary but you’ll typically need a relevant undergraduate degree such as interior design, architecture, graphic design or product design. Some relevant work experience might also be needed.

Common topics covered at this level include digital technologies, visual communication, creative analysis, critical perspectives, observation and surveying and environment and atmosphere.

Students already holding a bachelor’s degree in interior design might pick a course with a special focus such as urban design, health and wellbeing or architecture.

Aside from interior design, graduates might use their skills and knowledge to become an exhibition designer, production designer, spatial designer or a visual merchandiser.
