That's a really good question. What sets an applicant apart? Who are we looking for?
What we're looking for is the next generation of technology leaders. We're looking for people with strong technical backgrounds, but that could be from a wide range of different disciplines. If I took the example of Opto [sounds like 0:15]_electronics, we've had people from material science. We've had chemists. We've had mathematicians, e've had course physicists, electronics.
To an extent, we're about matching up that enthusiasm, the underlying scientific and technical skills and matching that to the right project, the right student, and then the right supervisor.
Staff, we're a huge variety. If I talk of it from a faculty level, we've got about 250 academic staff. I'm guessing probably staff from about 40 different countries. A very international staff, and that reflects in our research fellows. It reflects in our student body as well.
They're all specialists. They're all actively engaged in research. At the top end of the faculty we've got international research superstars right through to people really establishing their careers. Everybody is passionate about what they do. They're passionate about why Southampton is the place to be doing this type of technology, this type of research.
They're all very friendly. That's a big thing. People really get together. They work together. They talk about stuff. They support each other.
