Simon Collinson - Applicants

So when we recruit students to come to Birmingham Business School as part of, obviously, the University of Birmingham, being a Russell Group University, we clearly want superior academic credentials. They have to pass the hurdles in terms of their academic credentials.

Beyond that though, there's an awful lot around the areas of experience and corporate experience that some of our students have already had before they start degrees and that includes undergraduates.

Undergraduates come to us, in a lot of cases, already having done some form of a placement or internship or developed some kind of experience working in companies or businesses in the real world. That gives them the drive and that gives them the understanding how to connect their academic learning with the practical side of skills out in the real world.

Certainly for postgraduate courses, and certainly for the MBA and further degrees we're looking for, again, not just academic credentials but experience of work. Creativity, drive, motivation, all of these kinds of things.

And in some cases we like people already who have an interest and a drive to be international and to become more international, to travel, to work with people from different cultures. We give them the opportunity to do more of that and we know that that's what businesses want from our students when they move out into the workplace.
