Course Summary

Overview

Our course covers the management of critically ill patients with complex care needs being cared for in a cardiac and/or respiratory care environment.

You will develop your critical understanding of cardiorespiratory practice. By applying evidence based practice, you will deliver the best outcome of care for the patient and their family. You will have the opportunity to develop your:

  • knowledge
  • skills and understanding of assessment
  • planning, delivery and evaluation of care.

We place importance on your experience within the educational process, from both a personal and professional perspective.

Our lecturers are experienced in their specialist areas. They maintain excellent practice links with those areas locally or across the region. Relevant national and international research and evidence based literature informs course content. This helps you expand the breadth of your studies and develop a depth of critical
analysis and evaluation of practice.

Assessment

We will assess you with a variety of methods. Assessments give you an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge as well as the critical and reflective analysis required for professional practice.

Students who have completed similar vocational health and life sciences postgraduate certificate courses at Oxford Brookes have been employed within the speciality both locally and nationally. This course enables you as a practitioner to work through the Agenda for Change grading bands to further your career progression.

Modules

This single level 7 practice related module provides students with the opportunity to develop a critical problem-solving approach to the assessment and management of the deteriorating and acutely unwell adult. This module will enhance the students’ assessment skills enabling them to recognise changes in a patients’ clinical condition and communicate findings to colleagues in the multidisciplinary team. It will examine the management of these patients while implementing human factors principles to improve patient safety.

Entry requirements

You should have a UK or overseas degree from a recognised institution or equivalent professional or other qualification. You must hold professional registration with the relevant Nursing or Allied Health Professional Body in the UK. You will normally have a minimum of 12 months post-registration experience in a relevant cardiac or respiratory clinical area. You should be working in a relevant clinical environment in which you can achieve the clinical skills required. You should have access to an appropriate practice supervisor within that area. You will need to have secured the support of your line manager. You should have British Council IELTS: overall score of level 7 or above if English is not your first language.
