Course info

Studying Robotics and Smart Technologies enables you to experience an expert knowledge of the multi-discipline areas of robotics, autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence, smart cities and ‘internet of things’ for network-enabled products. This course offers a full spectrum of learning and current research with our experienced staff. Face-to-face teaching and use of our specialised laboratories will ensure you have the latest knowledge in this dynamic field. You’ll get a practical understanding of the use of robotics both inside and outside of the industry, as well as embedded systems, the use of network-enabled devices in the home, autonomous vehicles (both automotive and aeronautical), and the use of artificial intelligence. With this Masters course, you’ll undertake a major project where you can specialise in an area of interest to support your work goals. The course has been designed with employability in mind to ensure graduates meet the demands of a growing sector. On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: MSc Robotics and Smart Technologies

Modules

Modules (Year 1)
Msc Individual Project (60 credits) - Core

This is your chance to design and implement your own large-scale project of investigation, experimentation and analysis. Your project will need to have practical and investigative elements, meaning you will have the opportunity to evaluate existing background, theories and knowledge as applied to a design problem or the development and improvement of new or existing processes and products. By using the wide-ranging skills, you have developed during your course you will be able to use practical measurement, design, implementation and above all, creativity, to devise and develop a solution based on sound engineering principles.

Artificial Intelligence (20 credits) - Core

This module equips you with essential skills to thrive in the rapidly evolving field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It enhances your employability across various industrial and academic AI-related roles by focusing on modern statistical machine-learning methods, core AI principles, contemporary AI and machine-learning techniques, and their real-world applications. You will develop the ability to evaluate implementations, handle practical data and scenarios, and adapt techniques to real-world AI challenges, making you well-prepared for success in this dynamic field.

Advanced Embedded Systems: Programming And Applications (20 credits) - Core

Embedded Systems are used to solve complex problems in a wide variety of applications, such as smart homes, autonomous vehicles, Internet of Things, industrial automation etc. This module provides advanced level study of embedded systems to solve real-life/industrial problems by developing code for embedded systems. The module utilises a highly practical approach to gain industry-relevant skills to propel your career in the field of embedded systems.

Professional Engineering Skills And Project Management (20 credits) - Core

In this module you will evaluate your engineering prowess and project management acumen. This comprehensive module is designed to equip professionals with essential skills to thrive in today’s dynamic engineering landscape. This module covers four main areas: research methods, research analysis, project management and engineering ethics. You will be exposed to writing research projects, structure and formatting of professional reports, presenting results scientifically to a technical audience; advanced project management methodologies and tools to efficiently plan, execute and control engineering projects; explore ethical considerations in engineering emphasising the importance of integrity and responsible conduct. With Professional Engineering Skills and Project Management: it’s precision in every detail, excellence in every endeavour: embrace professionalism in engineering!

Internet Of Things (20 credits) - Core

Electronics and Telecommunications play a vital role in everyday life in making systems run seamlessly without users noticing. You will work as a team to propose, design and build an electronic Internet of Things (IoT) based system in order to solve a problem. You will decide on a problem that can be solved using IoT-based technologies such as suitable sensors, actuators and wireless technologies and work as a team to design and build a proof-of-concept prototype. This will include defining the problem, identifying suitable hardware and software and implementing the entire system.

Modern Robotic Systems (20 credits) - Core

This module will cover some exciting applications of modern robotic systems and principles that are applied at different design stages of modern robots. It will also discuss complex computation methods and tools required to perform these computations in a systematic manner. It will also allow participants to explore recent research and be informed of latest actuation methods and be able to evaluate performance of modern actuators.

Autonomous Intelligent Vehicles (20 credits) - Core

The rapid growth of autonomous vehicles, encompassing drones, driverless cars, and intelligent vehicular functions, presents a significant developmental challenge for industries such as defence, aerospace, automotive, and marine. To support this technological advancement, a deep understanding of key autonomy aspects is essential, including dynamics, control, guidance, navigation, decision-making, sensor and data fusion, communication, and networking. This comprehensive approach ensures the robustness and dependability of electronics, communications (e.g., V-2-V, V-2-I), and control systems, contributing to the success of autonomous technologies. As many electronic products use a Printed Circuit Board (PCB), this module will provide practical experience of how to design and assemble PCBs. You will work on related projects, which will involve defining the problem, identifying appropriate hardware and software, and implementing the entire system.
