COURSE OVERVIEW

Gain the knowledge and skills you need to prescribe safely and appropriately within your area of practice with our PGCert Non-Medical Prescribing for Nurses and Midwives.

This one-year course will equip you with the competency to practise within current legislation as an independent or supplementary non-medical prescriber.

Modules

This module will enable professional learners to develop a systematic, evidence-based and reflective approach to independent prescribing practice. By the end of the module the student should be able to: 1. Demonstrate and critically evaluate partnership approaches to decision making by assessing patients needs for medicines, taking account of their wishes and values and those of their carers when making prescribing decisions. Students should also be able to consider partnership working in a team context; 2. Demonstrate and critically evaluate history taking and clinical assessment skills that are essential in formulating a working diagnosis and treatment plan with the identification of onward referral where appropriate; 3. Critically evaluate the sources of information/advice and decision support systems in prescribing practice; 4. Construct and evaluate methods to maintain accurate, effective and timely records and ensure that other prescribers and health care staff are appropriately informed; 5. Critically evaluate the influences that can affect prescribing practice, (including local, national levels with a public health perspective) and demonstrate an understanding of how to ethically manage prescribing practice; 6. Critically evaluate the roles and relationships of others involved in prescribing, supplying and administering medicines; 7. Construct a working method to prescribe safely, appropriately and cost effectively, taking into account monitoring response to medicines, medication errors and stopping medicines where appropriate; 8. Demonstrate and critically evaluate professional accountability and responsibility in prescribing practice; 9. Critically appraise the relevant legislation to the practice of nurse/midwife prescribing.

Entry requirements

Be a registered nurse (level 1), a registered midwife or a SCPHN. The practice area must have the necessary governance structures in place (including clinical support, access to protected learning time and employer support where appropriate) to enable learners to undertake, and be adequately supported throughout, the programme. The applicant must have the competence, experience and academic ability to study at level 7. The applicant should be capable of safe and effective practice at a level of proficiency appropriate to the programme to be undertaken and their intended area of prescribing practice in the following areas: Clinical/health assessment, Diagnostics/care management, Planning and evaluation of care. Applicants for V300 supplementary/independent prescribing programmes have been registered with the NMC for a minimum of one year prior to application for entry onto the programme.
