Course Summary

The Professional Doctorate in English Language Education is designed for English language professionals who want to deepen their expertise and contribute to new knowledge in their field. This programme leads to a research qualification at doctoral level, combining structured learning with advanced research in English language education. This taught doctorate with research component includes six specialist modules before students begin their independent research. These modules cover key topics such as English language education research, applied linguistics research, second language acquisition studies, and psycholinguistics in language learning. Students also explore language learner psychology, language teacher psychology, discourse analysis in education, and sociolinguistics in language teaching. After completing the taught modules, students undertake an independent research project in English literature and linguistics. This project allows them to make an original contribution to knowledge in areas such as research in English literature, interdisciplinary literary studies, critical and cultural theory in literature, and comparative literature and translation studies. The programme supports a wide range of interests, from modern and contemporary literature research to literary theory and analysis. Throughout their studies, students receive research skills training and supervision, ensuring they develop the expertise needed to conduct high-level research. They also have opportunities to attend postgraduate research seminars, where they can share ideas and discuss their work with peers and experts in the field.
