Course Summary

COURSE OVERVIEW

Develop your capacity to solve real-life management problems
Gain practical skills in best practice project methodologies
Opportunities to network via the Association of Project Management

The dynamic and challenging world of business has encouraged the increasing use of project management across all business sectors. In turn, this has created a heightened demand for qualified project managers, not only in the traditional areas of engineering and technology but also into new fields of practice. These additional areas include health and wellbeing; environmental and community development programmes; education; archaeology; and many of the creative and key service industries (including tourism and event management); inspiring innovative forms of project and programme management.

Project Management at Winchester equips you with technical and interpersonal skills in both tactical and strategic approaches to portfolio, programme and project management. It also provides opportunities for you to acquire the attributes, skills and knowledge to work as effective and professional project managers to ensure you get the best out of your project teams. You discuss and debate ideas and practices, considering how they fit into your professional experience in the workplace.

You consider and develop practical approaches to project management, exploring and practicing traditional and contemporary approaches to the profession. Study core modules including Fundamentals of Project Management, Project Management Tools and Applications, Advanced Project and Programme Management, Principles of Responsible Management as well as Research Methods in Business. Then choose from the optional modules: Business Consulting, Leadership in Organizations, and Sustainable Innovation Management. You also complete a final dissertation or a consultancy project.

Careers

As an Association of Project Management (APM) Corporate Member, we have links to national events and organisations which will enable you to build your business networks. The programme develops skills and knowledge for action in the workplace. Project management is critical and useful for a wide variety of careers in the public, private and third sectors. The programme provides a firm foundation for undertaking postgraduate research at PhD level.

Modules

The dissertation enables students to specialise in an area of interest by conducting an independent, in-depth research project, guided by research-active tutors. Students will evaluate and synthesise research philosophies, develop research strategies, conduct research using secondary and/or primary sources and analyse their findings in relation to existing business theories. The dissertation is of interest to potential future employers, demonstrating critical abilities, research expertise and business knowledge. It can also prompt student interest in conducting further research, whether in a consultancy role or in continued academic research at PhD level.
