About Postgraduate Accounting

Accounting is a professional subject known for its accessibility from a wide range of academic backgrounds and high earning potential. It focuses on the movement of money in and out of businesses and other organisations, as well as the assets and finances of individuals or families.

Postgraduate students of accounting may choose to specialise in areas such as international accounting, forensic accounting, or financial management, to name a few. Graduate prospects are good for accounting students, with many graduate schemes available and clear progression routes in both public and private sectors.

There are over 200 postgraduate programmes currently available in accounting across more than 100 UK universities.

What to expect

A postgraduate degree might be a good move if you are already working in an accountancy role and looking to further your career by researching or specialising in a particular area. For example, you might want to increase your knowledge and skills in forensic accounting or business recovery and insolvency.

You’ll usually need an undergraduate degree as a minimum in a related subject such as accounting, finance, economics, business, or management. Some universities will also require relevant work experience so it’s worth doing your own research.

Typical modules covered on a postgraduate course might include auditing, taxation, ethics in finance and accounting, financial modelling, management accounting and credit and financial analytics. Content will vary depending on your area of interest.

Roles where a postgraduate qualification in accounting might help include a forensic accountant, chartered certificated accountant, auditor, stockbroker, economist, mortgage advisor and tax adviser for example.
