About Postgraduate Optometry

Optometry is a specialist medical discipline that focuses on the study of the eyes. Providing insights into the function and health of these important organs, postgraduate optometry students will build advanced skills in identifying and treating diseases of the eyes or defects in vision.

As well as evaluating patients’ health and giving advice, optometrists prescribe glasses or contact lenses and make referrals to other specialists, such as ophthalmologists or orthoptists, when necessary.

There are over 20 postgraduate degrees in optometry to choose from at 10 different universities in the UK. You might study optometry specifically or complete a combined qualification, including areas like ophthalmic or vision sciences.

What to expect

Postgraduate courses in optometry offer qualified eye care professionals’ further opportunities in a specialised area, leadership or research.

A wide range of modules are offered to recognise the increasing need for specialist training within optometry, including glaucoma, acute eye care, paediatrics, dry eye, medical retina, and clinical teaching, amongst others.

On completion of an optometry postgraduate course, some graduates use their qualification to develop a specialist optometric service or go into research and lecturing. Others might use the experience to become an independent prescribing optometrist.
