Aston University is a research-focused institution based in the heart of Birmingham, the UK’s second largest city. It has been a university since 1966 but has an educational heritage stretching back to 1895, where it began as the Birmingham Municipal Technical School.
Aston University is a prominent university in the UK, having placed 20th in the 2022 Whatuni Student Choice Awards and 41st in the 2024 Complete University Guide league tables. It’s known for its pioneering approach to university placements and integrated learning, which it introduced into the wider higher education system in the UK. Students applying to a postgraduate programme at Aston University will need to satisfy the entry requirements of their chosen course to receive an offer of study.
Entry criteria for a particular course may also include minimum previous professional experience, or a minimum English language competency for non-native applicants.
For example, applicants for the MSc in Pharmaceutical Science will need to show evidence of a 2:2 or higher grade at undergraduate level. Accepted subjects include pharmacy, physical science, biochemistry and chemistry, chemical engineering, medicine or genetics. Other experience and application strength will also be considered.
Students applying for the MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) will need a 2:2 grade degree or higher. Applicants with different qualifications may be considered, but this will be on a case-by-case basis.
Applicants for the LLM in International Commercial Law will need a 2:1 grade undergraduate honours degree, or higher. Equivalent international degrees are also accepted for consideration.

Aston University, Birmingham offers postgraduate students a number of options when it comes to finding their perfect living arrangements. The university offers a guaranteed first-year accommodation place to the first 50 applicants for postgraduate study at Aston, providing they meet the eligibility criteria.
Postgraduate students at Aston will only be able to secure university-managed accommodation on a 51-week contract.
Aston University offers its accommodation in partnership with Unite Students, which maintains award-winning halls of residence right on the university’s compact campus.
