When it comes to postgraduate applicants there are a number of things that are important. Of course, one of the things that is important is intellectual curiosity. That's very, very important, above all possibly. To ensure that students are really curious to find out what's going on in the world, and trying to make sense of this, and try and understand and explain why things are happening. For instance, when in the future they develop critical skills, a prime minister, or secretary of defense, or foreign secretary asks them, do you want to join in a war, that they have good knowledge in terms of being able to assess those types of questions.
Much related to that are questions where they'll be able to use the type of skills that we provide them with, critical skills, analytical skills, that they have good ability to read and write. Those are skills that we obviously hope that they will bring to the table but that we will significantly develop for them so that they will then be able to go out and do a fantastic job one day, start a new employment, and be able to apply all of these skills quite readily.
Quite a wide range of careers that students will go into. Some students are so interested by international politics, diplomacy, and foreign policy that they might join the first string of the foreign office. Or, they might get involved in jobs, for instance in the European Union there is a number of opportunities within the European Commission, within the European Parliament, or so on. Some of those students might go on and get involved in a security service whether that's the military, whether that's the police. We have excellent links with the police, and in Dundee we have the Scottish Institute for Policing Research where we're leading research across all the major Scottish universities. So, there are very important opportunities here also in policing.
Students might go on to do traditional jobs in businesses. Many businesses nowadays require students to have a good grasp of international affairs because they'll be involved in global trade. So, there are many opportunities for our students also in various types of businesses. I think the job prospects are quite varied, and we're pretty certain that students will be able to take advantage of the education that they get here at Dundee.
