The Doctor of Medicine (MD) course is a postgraduate degree in medicine and is a higher qualification than the Bachelor of Medicine or Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS or MBchB) degrees. The qualification is awarded upon the submission of a thesis or a portfolio of published work. Alongside the thesis, the assessment can also include a viva voce exam. The MD qualification is considered analogous to the PhD at many universities, and similarly features a large focus on independent research as well as a strong link between the student and the university where the course is being studied. As such, the MD is well suited to students considering a career in medical research.
In order to study on an MD course, applicants must have already qualified with an MBBS or MBchB (Bachelor of Medicine or Surgery) and must also have five years worth of postgraduate experience.
As an MD qualification places an emphasis upon research, it is important that before you start the course, you manage to find an institution to fund your research. Your funding should not only cover your course expenses, but also the costs of living while you study.
Before applying, it is also important that you establish that there is at least one member of staff that specialises in your chosen field willing to act as a supervisor.
Candidates studying for this particular qualification will be expected to complete a programme of research as well meeting regularly with an appointed supervisor. The contact time required of those doing an MD is less than those studying for other postgraduate qualifications (such as an MA or PGDip) and independent work and research forms a key part of this course.
The majority of courses will be offered on a full-time basis and will last a minimum of two to three years.
Some schools and Universities will offer students the opportunity to study on part-time courses which will last a minimum of four to six years.
