Study our MA English programme, designed to allow you to specialise in either language, literature or to take a more integrated pathway. Our modules will develop your research expertise and apply your skills in real world contexts. Studied in-person, at our campus in the heart of Birmingham, this English masters degree is suitable for those wanting to develop their knowledge of English language and/or literature in exciting and applied contexts. This module will provide a thorough foundation of academic practice with English language and literature. Indicative content will include: engagement with both qualitative and quantitative approaches to data collection and analysis, with attention to the conceptualisation of what constitutes ‘data’, the processes through which it may be generated, and the methodological frameworks through which it can be systematically examined.
Discover the practical applications of English for personal development and societal contributions. Topics include English in education, bibliotherapy, literacies, linguistics for social justice, English in policy and innovation, research dissemination, networking and grant-writing skills.
This module is designed to give you a competitive edge by honing your professional acumen and preparing you for success in a fast-paced global environment. You will engage with a range of activities, including collaborating in multi-disciplinary teams to tackle real-world challenges focused on Environmental, Social, and Governance themes.
This module will provide a thorough foundation of academic practice with English language and literature. Indicative content will include: a comprehensive grounding in research practices across English language and literature, introducing you to a wide range of datasets. It develops advanced skills in analysing literary texts and paratexts through close reading, while also equipping you to work with a variety of spoken language using appropriate transcription and discourse-analytic methods.
You will undertake an independent research project relevant to your masters programme, demonstrating your ability to design, conduct and report findings. Guided by a supervisor, this complex exercise will strengthen and test various subject-specific and transferable skills, including research methodology and academic writing.
