About Postgraduate Biochemistry

Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary field that brings together elements of biology and chemistry to explore how chemical processes drive biological life and influence its function. This exciting field has wide applications across sectors such as pharmacology, nutrition and healthcare.

Biochemists will find a range of graduate employment opportunities, whether in academic or industrial research, or in areas like product development and forensics.

There are over 70 postgraduate programmes available in biochemistry at more than 25 universities around the UK, including MSc and PhD courses that offer opportunities to specialise in areas like pharmacy, clinical biochemistry or biochemical engineering.

What to expect

In general, you will usually need to have an undergraduate degree in biological sciences or biomedical sciences. You may also need to demonstrate some related work experience.

Topics will vary depending on the course you select but common modules taught at this level include laboratory management, biomedical law, ethics, and bioanalytical techniques.

A postgraduate qualification in biochemistry can open opportunities in both industry and research such as becoming a biomedical scientist, forensic scientist, research scientist, biotechnologist, pharmacologist, environmental manager or a toxicologist for example.
